Bruce Willis Caricature... revisited

I felt as though I didn't do him justice the first time around, so I redid the caricature and attempted to paint in colour for the first time...

A Couple o' Jermaines...

These are a couple of quick-ish caricature sketches that I did of Jermaine Clement of 'Flight of the Conchords' and 'Eagle Vs. Shark' fame, most between 10 and 20 mins.

Bride Sketches

These are some sketches I did of 'hot brides' for a wedding blog. Just some rough ones so the blogger can choose which style they wanted, then i'll do a finalized and cleaned and coloured version. The third one was based off of Jessica Stroup, who you can see these days on the highly anticipated and tremendously bad (but in a good way) Beverly Hills, 90210.

Bruce Willis Caricature

Kind of? Sort of? ...maybe not.
Too portraity. And I made his neck really tight to his jaw to give him a beefy look, but I think that was an error in judgement. His mouth bugs me too, but I at least like how his ears turned out.
ANYHOW! Here are a couple of other ones:

Painted Caricature

This is my 2nd attempt at painting digitally in photoshop. Obviously, much more learning is in order. Speaking of which, if anyone has any tips on painting facial hair / stubble, please toss them my way.

New Caricatures

In retrospect, I'd have done Jesse Jackson's eyes larger.

Illustration Friday: 'Enough'

My first submission to Illustration Friday's topic for 'Enough'. Living in Vancouver, fewer things have foiled my plans more than the rain. Also, my very first time drawing in Sketchbook Pro. Pretty sure much more practice is in order.

Threadless submission

Just submitted this tshirt design to threadless. I'm sure i'll be slaughtered by the community's comments and votes, but... figured it was worth a shot.

American Gothic

My brother's 2 friends just got engaged and had a party this past weekend. He asked me to draw a picture to give them based on the 'American Gothic' painting of the 2 old people in front of their farmhouse with the pitchfork... This is them opening the drawing this past weekend. I think they found it amusing.

Back to Life Drawing

The Roundhouse Community Centre offered free life drawing sessions at lunch for 3 weeks in March as part of their Tribute to Dance festival. It was great to be able to life draw again, after 3 years of being away from it. These models were dancers who all wore clothing which posed a bit of a challenge from the regular nudy poses, but it was still fun. Anyhow, here are a few of my drawings... They were all about 2-5 minute poses.

A little sketch I did of some of the characters from season 1 of The Shield - a super good cop drama show.

Car Bombs

Hi friends!
Indeed, i am still alive and have returned from my absence to commence with the blog posts.

To explain the picture from today:
When i was in Ireland with my brother and sister, we were at a pub with some Aussies who introduced us to 'car bombs' - a half pint of Guinness and shot of Baileys. it was pretty stupendous. So this is my brother (as the kid from A Christmas Story who is in line in front of Ralphie to see Santa in the Aviator hat who says "I li-i-ike Saa-aanta", who my brother frequently imitates) enjoying a car bomb. Or about to.

New Layout

I've been working on my Fast Food designs, but nothing worth scanning in yet. In the meantime, i finally got rid of the heinous pink background and put this up instead. The picture was taken in July at almost-sunset down at English Bay.

Fast Food Nation

These are a couple of rough character ideas for a model pack i'm going to start working on about some employees at a fast food restaurant.

The cast so far includes:

  • old senile man who wears bunny slippers to work, dresses in a 50s diner-type of style, reminiscent of his younger years, always messes up the orders.
  • chubby woman who is all paranoid about her coworkers
  • a younger girl who pretends she's britney spears, because she wears that head microphone thing like britney does when she performs.
  • younger, slimey guy who, when someone orders something, keeps calling out the supersized version even if they didn't want it to keep upselling.
  • Manager of the store who is still in highschool and carries around a math textbook (thanks to Al for that idea). I may get rid of the Upsizer guy in favour of this manager, rather than keeping them both.

Then my plan is to work on expressions / poses for each. I want to work more with single characters rather than just do up a new character each day and then chuck it to the bin, you know?

Plus, this way i get to design some layouts of the restaurant which should be fun.

We Are Family

My scanner stinks - i have to mega-darken everything to get it to scan in properly. Urg.

Project Runway

On season 2 of this fantastic show, there was a guy named Santino who was just the funniest guy to watch. I'm sure the editors made him out to be a lot worse than he was, but he was one of those characters that just MADE the show, you know? ANyhow, i was rewatching my copies of season 2 on the weekend, and sorta doodled this - a caricature of him.

And here is a generic girl.

Fireworks Display

I live down near English Bay where the annual fireworks display kicked off last night. On my way home from work i walked along the water to marvel at the number of people who were there already (hours before the start of the show), and to see how packed the beach was. Here are a few of the people who stuck out in my mind...

Obviously tremendously excited to be down on the beach 5 hours prior to the display starting...

A little old man begging down by the edge of the beach... I was quite fond of his Mr. Rogers cardigan sweater.

A fat, little bully who felt it necessary to push his way through crowds of old people and children as he slithered his way closer to the water.

Map

You know those cartoony maps that you see in all the touristy shops of Vancouver?

i.e.: this one

Well, I'm doing one for the law firm my sister works at. Some lawyers there are going to Dallas for a conference and wanted a map to hand out to other lawyers to show them how to get to the Convention Centre. One of their landmarks is a farmers market which, in real life, is just a series of 4 tents, so they wanted me to draw a farmer in the spot of the farmers market instead. And that's what this post is all about. He's supposed to be sort of 'emerging' from the map... you know? That's why the bottom half sqwooshes away to tiny feet.

I think it'll look better when i paste him onto the actual road map. *cough*
